At least 670 million people around the world are blind or vision impaired simply because they do not have access to an eye examination and a pair of glasses.

In line with the government of Rwanda’s programme, One Sight has established an optical laboratory to help people in all categories to acquire eye glasses since many lacked access and though glasses were for the rich and literate people only.

Dr Chondo Jeannine who represented the minister of health said that this initiative has come at the right time and will help the Rwandan population. The laboratory will also help students to learn about eyeglasses and how to make them.

According to Tuzinde Vincent, the country director of One Sight, it used to take two to four weeks for a patient to get eye glasses at the hospitals due to ordering processes but this optical laboratory will help any Rwandan access eye glasses at affordable prices and in a short time.

He also said that in four years, all public hospitals will be delivering eyeglasses and will also change the existing misconception about eyeglasses.

This is the first optical laboratory which manufactures eye glasses in Rwanda, it will cut lenses and fix the frames using the latest technologies. Rwanda has been ordering optical products from the America making it very expensive and takes long to obtain.
