Areruya wins Tour du Rwanda

Joseph Areruya won the overall race at this year’s Tour du Rwanda after the final day circuit stage in Kigali this Sunday. Rwanda’s Areruya cycling for South African team Dimension Data for Qhubeka won the overall 8-day race closely followed by Eyob Metkel, Qhubeka teammate from Eritrea.
The South African team dominated the competition winning three of the eight stages and was the best team securing a place for the European circuit.
The final stage victory in Kigali on Sunday went to Valens Ndayisenga with the defending champion salvaging his race. The sprint for second went to Redwan Ebrahim (Ethiopia) with Cameron Piper (Illuminate) in third place.
“I entered this race with an aim of winning and I thank God for my dream is a reality now. I dedicate this trophy to my family and all Rwandans especially those who were on the streets supporting me,” Areruya said.
Second in 2015 and fourth last year, Areruya secured the fourth straight win for Rwanda following overall wins for Jean Bosco Nsengiyumva and two for Ndayisenga.
The 2017 Tour du Rwanda covered a total distance of 819 kilometers, and for the second consecutive year, it has gone in all the four provinces of the country and Kigali. The top 5 cyclists in this year’s competition are: Areruya Joseph, Eyob metkel, Suleiman Kangagi, Jean Bosco Nsengimana and Patrick Byukusenga.
