Authorities have confirmed today to the press that at least three people were injured, 1,000 left homeless and 924 houses destroyed by floods caused by heavy rains that severely hit the country’s Western Province over the weekend.

Alphonse Munyantwari, the Governor of Western Province has said that the floods were aggravated by the flooding of River Sebeya that pours its waters into Lake Kivu after it had had its banks broken.

We are now looking at ways, we can help those affected by giving them relief aid as some of them lost their property and livestock,” said Munyantwari.

Authorities have called on people to maintain proper hygiene following the destruction of 356 latrines, 11 bridges and Nyundo school of Arts and Music were also severely destroyed.
