The Chairperson of the Permanent Representative Committee, Hope Tumukunde Gasatura at the opening the ExtraOrdinary Summit on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in the capital Kigali, has said that the political statement they have launched aims at strengthening the fragmented African markets as well as serving as a political statement and declaration of the idea of African Unity in economic and commercial terms.
She said that main objective of the AfCFTA is fast-track African Union Agenda 2063 and an explanation of commitment by African leaders to find joint solutions to African problems without which the Africa’s integration will remain a dream.
“As you are all aware, the establishment of the AfCFTA is a critical political priority of our African Union leadership. It is also a flagship project of the African Union Agenda 2063,’ said Tumukunde.
“The AfCFTA is not just about trade liberalization for its own sake, but rather it is also a political reflection of our leaders’ commitment to finding joint solutions for African problems. It should be emphasized that the AfCFTA is a political exercise aimed at strengthening and deepening our fragmented African markets, for the benefit of our African producers and consumers” she added, “Without the AfCFTA and Africa’s economic integration, rhetoric about African unity will remain empty and undermine our credibility in the eyes of our citizens who would like to see tangible benefits flowing from the process of continental integration,”
The launch has been attended by representatives from 55 African countries. The AfCFTA that is largely seen as a realization of greater levels of Africa’s integration and unity will be signed by the Executive Council on March 21st
