President Alassane Ouattara of the Republic Ivory Coast is in the country for a three-day visit to attend the Ibrahim Governance Weekend where former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf will be presented with the Mo Ibrahim Prize.

The Ivorian leader was received by Rwanda’s Foreign Affairs Minister Louise Mushikiwabo and other top government officials.

On Thursday, President Ouattara visited Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi to honour the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. He laid a wreath of flowers on mass graves containing the remains of more than 250,000 victims buried at Gisozi.

The President was also given a guided tour to different sections of the memorial to explain to him how the Genocide was planned and executed.

Ouattara extended his condolences writing in the visitor’s book, “Our heartfelt condolences and our compassion to the people of Rwanda.”

He said that something like this (Genocide) should never happen again and wished Rwanda to rebuild and carry on.
