At least 40 people were killed on Thursday and hundreds still missing after a river in eastern Uganda burst its banks following heavy rains, giving way to rolling debris and muddy water into a settlement, authorities confirmed.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said yesterday that his government had dispatched rescue team to the dreadful areas. He said that the government was thinking of options to avoid similar disasters.

“I have received the sad news of landslides wreaking havoc in Bududa District, killing a yet-to-specified number of residents. The government has dispatched rescue teams to the affected areas. I urge residents to cooperate with authorities to mitigate possible further danger,” said President Museveni through his official twitter handle.

“The government will look at the other options available to stop further occurrences of these disasters. My condolences to those who have lost their dear ones in this catastrophe” he added.

Uganda Red Cross said the dreadful disaster swept both the animals and people; “animals and people were swept away in this disaster.”

By press time different relief teams were still hunting for the missing people.

Local authorities said  the Thursday catastrophe displaced many who live in dire need of relief items like food plus shelter.
