The new Secretary-General the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), Louise Mushikiwabo has started her job today at a colourful ceremony held at the organization’s Headquarters in the French capital Paris.

Her Predecessor whom she defeated for the job, Canadian Michaëlle Jean was present to hand over office to the Rwandan woman.

Rwanda’s former Foreign Affairs Minister  Mushikiwabo was October12 unanimously elected the 4th Secretary-General of the OIF during the Summit in Yerevan, Armenia.

Mushikiwabo’s road to success started when she garnered the support from most influential francophone countries, including France has put her in a lead two months away to the polls.

Political analysts had before Canada withdrew support for its candidate, envisaged that bilingual Mushikiwabo would trounce incumbent Canadian Michaëlle Jean with a huge margin based on the massive support she enjoyed plus her big profile.

Heavy weight leaders in the OIF including the French President Macron endorsed her candidature.  The President of the most influential Francophone nation in Africa [Democratic Republic of Congo] President Joseph Kabila also threw his weight behind her.

Mushikiwabo sailed on the message about unity and solidarity of African nations, search for solutions to youth unemployment and immigrants.

She had attracted the support of most leaders including Madagascan President Harley Rajaonarimampianina who is the current chairperson of the organization and President Idriss Deby Itno of the Republic of Tchad.

Her victory will win Rwanda great influence at the global level.

Rwanda subscribes to OIF, a body that brings together French-speaking countries worldwide.
