At least 21 are confirmed dead after a midnight fire broke out at an illegal pipeline in Mexico, injuring over 70 people amid a heightened crackdown on illegal fuel dealing by the Mexican authorities.
Witnesses told AFP that the local folks carrying containers of different sizes rushed to the scene of a leaking pipeline to loot gasoline that was gushing profusely before they met their fate.
A deafening explosion was followed by screaming and shouting for help as they fled the scene for dear life.
The midnight fire took place at Tlahuelilpan in Hidalgo state, 65Kms away from the Mexican capital.
“I went just to see what was happening, and then the explosion happened. I rushed to help people," Fernando Garcia, 47, told reporters. "I had to claw through pieces of people who had already been burned to bits."
“I am deeply saddened by the suffering in Tlahuelilpan caused by the explosion of a pipeline," said the leftist leader through Twitter.
"I call on the whole government to assist people there," he added.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador early Saturday went to the scene to express the government solidarity with the victims and the Mexican people at large.
The government responded to the accident early enough and fire fighters were busy doing their best to put off the fire as the medical personnel and security operative relentlessly evacuated the survivors from the fatal scene.
