At least eight people were killed by unidentified gunmen on Saturday and Sunday in Goma city in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, authorities have confirmed.
The mayor of Goma, Timothée Muissa Kiense, has told reporters that the shooting happened in three districts.
“In Mugunga, there were shots fired last night. Five people were killed and others wounded. In Katoy, one person was killed near a gas station, further north to Buhene, two others died,” Timothée Muissa Kiense, Mayor of Goma told AFP.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants were indiscriminately shooting at by-passers in Mugunga where five were killed and dozens wounded.
The authorities said investigations into the murder were underway.
Meanwhile, killings coincided with the meeting of Presidential loser, Martin Fayulu on Saturday at Butembo 266Kms away from Goma.
Fayulu who declared himself a winner of the December2018 disputed presidential election continues to contest President Felix Tshisekendi’s victory.
