Burundian President Nkurunziza dies of heart attack, says Gov’t

Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza has died from heart attack according to the government announcement released today. The President who died at 56 in Nairobi was set to officially handover power in August this year.  

“The Government of the Republic of Burundi announces with great sadness the unexpected death of His Excellency Pierre Nkurunziza, President of the Republic of Burundi, at the Cinquantenaire Hospital in Karusi following a cardiac arrest on June 8, 2020,” said the statement released by the Burundian government today.

Nkurunziza ruled Burundi for nearly 15 years  and later his decision to run for a highly contested third term in 2015 sparked insurrection in the country.

Many Burundians, especially those that opposed his rule fled the country for fear of their lives.
