President Paul Kagame on July7 reinstated the Governor of the Northern Province Jean Marie Vianney Gatabazi who had been relieved of his duties on May25, 2020. The reinstated Governor was sacked together with his fellow leader, the Governor of the Southern Province, Emmanuel Gasana.
Simultaneously, the President appointed Kamonyi District Mayor, Alice Kayitesi the new Governor of the Southern Province, replacing Gasana.
“His Excellency The President has reinstated Mr Jean Marie Vianney Gatabazi as Governor of the Northern Province and appointed Ms Alice Kayitesi as Governor of Southern Province,” reads in part the statement from the Office of the Prime Minister.
After his sacking over alleged accountability issues, Gatabazi apologized to H.E Paul Kagame , the ruling RPF-Inkotanyi party and Rwandan people for having disappointed them during his tenure as Governor.
Gatabazi who had been in the position for close to three years had expressed gratitude to the President for having entrusted him with leadership responsibilities.
“I apologize for any and all disappointment to You, Excellency @PaulKagame, @rpfinkotanyi and the people of Rwanda, and I look forward to the next chapter of my life continuing to serve my country to my best ability and always loyal to You Excellency President and RPF!” said Gatabazi through a tweet.
“I am so grateful to HE @PaulKagame for the trust and privilege to serve as Governor of the North for the last two years&9months, and also grateful to the people of the North for great collaboration and achievements over the last few years,” he added.
