Wild flames of fire and clouds of smoke resulting from a strange fire radiated from the top of the main building of Makerere University in Kampala (Uganda) in the wee hours of this Sunday.

The Police managed to put out the fire hours later. Property worth unknown amount of money including the University records was destroyed.

Uganda’s oldest and largest University that opened in 1922 suffered a wild fire over the weekend. Many past and present leaders in Africa have studied from this University, including Mwalimu Julius Nyerere (Founder President of Tanzania), Sir Edward Mutesa (First President of Uganda), Jaramogi Oginga Odinga (Kenya), President Mwai Kibaki (Kenya), President Benjamin Mkapa (Tanzania) and President Joseph Kabila (DRC).

Makerere is one of Africa’s most prestigious universities that have produced many renowned academics in the region and beyond.

“It is a very dark morning for Makerere University. Our iconic Main Administration Building caught fire and the destruction is unbelievable. But we are determined to restore the building to its historic state in the shortest time possible”, said Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, the Vice-Chancellor of Makerere University.
