The 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2022 commenced Sunday in the Rwandan capital, Kigali with a three-day Commonwealth Youth Forum (CYF) that brought together more than 350 youths from 54 member states of the Commonwealth.

The youths said that CHOGM is an opportunity for them to shape their future citing advantages linked to using a shared language (English).

“We can begin to be a part of the conversations of the world from this capital of Rwanda to talk about climate action, innovation, young people leading progressive change in Africa,” remarked Jacob Eyeru, a youth delegate from Uganda.

Eyeru said that CHOGM is a vessel that the youths will effectively exploit to contribute to a cross-section of problems and challenges that continue to be a toll on the youth including gender inequality, crime, unemployment and poor and irrelevant education.

“Taking Charge of our Future” is the theme The Youth Forum.

“We hope the next three days will provide an invaluable opportunity for the 350 youth representatives in attendance, to have an input on building a future that benefits us all – paving the way to a stronger and more successful Commonwealth,” observed Ms. Darrion Narine, the Co-chair of an International Youth Task Force coordinating the Youth Forum.

Narine said the Forum will inspire the youth to productively engage in pertinent global issues.

Rwanda joined the Commonwealth in 2009, becoming the 2nd member state admitted into this organisation without any direct colonial ties to Britain, after Mozambique – raising number of member states to 54 and 2.6 billion people ( a third of the world’s population).

More than 60 per cent of Commonwealth citizens are under the age of 30. More than 35 Heads of Government and pretty much 5,000 are taking part in the CHOGM. Other meeting including Women Forum, People’s Forum, Business Forum will be help on the sidelines.
