Rwandan duo eye medals at KungFu Wushu Championship in China

The Rwandan Kung Fu Wushu team which left for Kigali on Wednesday evening for China, is eying medals, says Kung Fu president Marc Uwiragiye.

Speaking to this publication before departure, Uwiragiye who traveled with the team explained that the 15th edition of the World Wushu Championship 2019 will start on 19-24, October 2019 in China Minhang District, Shanghai. 

Rwanda is represented by Emmanuel Havugimana in what is dubbed as ‘Nan Quan’ while Claudine Kwizera will fight in the Taolu category. The two are under the guidance of head coach Geoffrey Simparikubwabo.

“The target is to win medals,” The president said, adding “ He will also be attending the Uwushu 15th Congress meetings aimed at improving and developing Kungfu across the world. Over 100 countries are taking part in the annual championship including prominent KunguFu enthusiasts like Jet Li and the International Olympic Committee Vice President and IWUF President Yu Zaiqing.   

“This is the not the first time we are sending participants for the championship, ” President said adding “The previous team did not win any medal but we are hopeful it will happen this time around”

Talking about the expectations from the duo, head coach Simparikubwabo pointed out that he is optimistic his fighters will perform well taking into consideration the training and preparations attained ahead of the championship.

“We will work out our best to come back with a medal, the two fighters are the best in the country, they have the required experienced having been trained by experienced Kung Fu Wushu Shaolin coaches from China before the championship. Our target is to win not to be tourists” He added. 

For the last two years, the local Kung Fu Uwushu federation (RKW) has promoted and developed the sport by organizing competition like the Kung Fu Genocide Memorial Competition from the local level to an international attracting regional team from Zambia and Tanzania.
